UPDATED: '₦1.5 Billion Obi of Lagos Palace, a Fraudulent Scheme' – Police Reveals

The Lagos State Police Command has provided fresh details on the arrest of 65-year-old Chibuike Azubike, who recently declared himself the “Obi of Lagos” and announced the planned unveiling of a ₦1.5 billion palace prototype.

According to the Police, Azubike, who paraded himself as an engineer, confessed during interrogation that he is not a qualified engineer but merely a supplier of construction materials. Investigators say he used the false title “Engr.” to deceive members of the public into believing in his non-existent royal project.

Findings revealed that the so-called unveiling of the “Obi of Lagos Palace,” scheduled for Saturday, September 13, 2025, at Apple Hall, Amuwo Odofin, was nothing more than a fraudulent ploy. The Police said the plan was designed to trick unsuspecting Nigerians and prominent personalities into parting with their money under the guise of supporting a royal initiative.

The Lagos Command emphasized that Azubike acted alone, without the recognition or backing of any legitimate chieftaincy institution. His self-styled title and the palace project were described as deliberate attempts to mislead the public and stir disaffection among residents.

Speaking on the matter, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, urged Lagosians to disregard Azubike’s claims and remain vigilant against fraudsters disguising themselves as traditional leaders.

“All suspects connected to this case will be charged in court once investigations are completed. The Command remains committed to protecting citizens from all forms of criminal deception while ensuring peace, security, and public order in Lagos State,” CP Jimoh assured.

The Police also warned residents to be cautious of misleading social media posts promoting illegitimate figures or institutions, stressing that fraudsters often exploit such platforms to lure victims.
