‘You Can’t Probe Me, I Worked for Tinubu’ – Ibas Dares Rivers Assembly

The immediate past Rivers State Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), has dared the Rivers State House of Assembly over its plan to probe the state’s finances under his six-month tenure.

Ibas, who left office on September 17 following the expiration of the emergency rule, insisted the lawmakers lacked the power to investigate him since he was appointed by President Bola Tinubu and supervised by the National Assembly.

Rivers State expenditure probe

At its first plenary after resumption, the Martin Amaewhule-led Assembly resolved to investigate how funds were spent during the emergency rule. According to The Punch, data released by the Federation Account Allocation Committee shows that Rivers State received at least ₦254.37bn from between March and August 2025, with over 52% coming from oil derivation and ₦26.31bn lost to debt servicing.

Civil society organisations have also demanded accountability, accusing Ibas of opacity and pointing to stalled projects despite the huge inflows.

But Ibas dismissed the probe as a “fool’s errand,” arguing that any attempt to scrutinise his tenure amounted to questioning the President and the National Assembly that oversaw his administration.
