The Senator representing Bayelsa East, Benson Sunday Agadaga, has formally resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
His defection letter was read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Wednesday’s plenary session.
In the letter, Agadaga said the PDP had been weakened by prolonged internal crises and “irreconcilable differences”, stressing that the party was no longer the formidable platform it once was.
“The umbrella is leaking profusely. Things are falling apart and the center can no longer hold,” he wrote, referencing Chinua Achebe’s famous line.

Agadaga noted that he arrived at the decision after “wide-ranging consultations”, arguing that “progressive thinking and acting progressively is the only way to renew hope in Nigeria.”
The former commissioner, SUBEB chairman, special adviser and chief of staff under multiple Bayelsa administrations, thanked his supporters and acknowledged the PDP’s role in his political rise.
