Four members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who had earlier withdrawn their support for the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara have made a dramatic U-turn, announcing their return to the impeachment process.
The lawmakers made their position known on Thursday after holding a press briefing ahead of the Assembly’s plenary sitting, where they reaffirmed their commitment to the move to remove the governor and his deputy, Ngozi Ordu.
At the briefing, the legislators accused Governor Fubara of attempting to intimidate members of the House through the alleged use of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). They claimed such actions amounted to an attack on the independence of the legislature and posed a threat to democratic governance in Rivers State.
The lawmakers further insisted that the impeachment process would continue, despite internal disagreements and earlier withdrawals by some members, stressing that they were acting in what they described as the interest of democracy and the rule of law.
