Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, was almost arrested by security operatives at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Wednesday shortly after returning from Cairo, Egypt.
The incident followed the reported arrest of four of his former aides, after which the ex-governor said he could be next.
Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, El-Rufai said, “Four people who worked with me in Kaduna have been arrested. For me, it’s only a matter of time—they will come for me too.”
His media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye, saidon X that security agents approached El-Rufai immediately after he disembarked from his flight. However, the former governor reportedly declined to accompany them, insisting that he had not received any formal invitation or warrant.
A video seen online showed supporters at the airport chanting solidarity songs and forming a protective ring around him as the situation unfolded.

El-Rufai recently left the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and has become increasingly critical of President Bola Tinubu.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) are allegedly investigating allegations involving El-Rufai and some of his former aides. He has denied any wrongdoing, describing the actions against him as politically motivated.
