The Labour Party has postponed its scheduled ward, local government and state congresses, while also unveiling a 45-member committee to plan and oversee the party’s national convention.
The decision was announced in a statement issued by the Senior Special Adviser (Media) to the Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party, Ken Eluma Asogwa.
According to the statement, the postponement followed a stakeholders’ meeting involving members of the party’s Interim National Working Committee (NWC) and representatives of labour unions.
The party explained that the move was necessary to allow members and prospective Nigerians enough time to participate in the ongoing membership re-registration exercise.
Earlier, the party had released a timetable showing that ward congresses were scheduled for March 26, 2026, local government congresses for March 28, and state congresses for March 31, while the national convention was expected to hold on April 11, 2026.
However, the Labour Party said the exercise has now been postponed to ensure wider participation and better preparations ahead of the congresses and convention.
As part of the preparations, the party inaugurated a 45-member Congresses and Convention Committee to coordinate the process.
The committee is chaired by Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, the member representing Isiala Ngwa South/Isiala Ngwa North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
Other members include Comrade Salisu N. Mohammed, Hon. Obinna Aguocha, Hon. Amaobi Ogah, Hon. Ibe Okwara, Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, Hon. Alozie Munachim Ikechi, Hon. Benedict Etanabene, Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, Comrade Lawson Osagie and Mrs. Imaobong Ufot, among others.
While inaugurating the committee, the Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, urged members to carry out their duties with diligence, impartiality and commitment.
She also encouraged them to use the period created by the postponement to ensure adequate preparations for smooth, credible and hitch-free congresses and the party’s national convention.
The Labour Party further appealed to its members, supporters across the country and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for understanding over the adjustment.
The party assured that a new timetable for the congresses and national convention will be announced in due course.
