Nigeria’s Ambassador-Designate to Algeria, Mohammed Lele, Dies in Türkiye

The Federal Government has confirmed the death of Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, who passed away at the age of 50.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the development in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, stating that the senior diplomat died in the early hours of April 19, 2026, in Ankara, Türkiye, following a prolonged illness.

According to the ministry, Lele was serving as Director of the Middle East and Gulf Division before his appointment as ambassador-designate to the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, a nomination that had already been confirmed by the Nigerian Senate prior to his passing.

Describing him as a committed and disciplined career diplomat, the ministry noted that Lele contributed significantly to Nigeria’s foreign policy engagements throughout his service.

Born in Gamawa, Bauchi State, in 1976, he studied Economics at Bayero University, Kano, before joining the Foreign Service. Over the course of his career, he served in Nigerian diplomatic missions in Berlin, Lomé, and Riyadh.

“Ambassador Lele was known for his intellectual depth, strategic insight, and unwavering commitment to the advancement of Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives,” the statement added.

The ministry further described his passing as a “monumental loss” to his family, the Foreign Service, and the country at large, while extending condolences to his immediate family, colleagues, and the government and people of Bauchi State.

Mohammed Mahmud Lele was laid to rest on Wednesday in Kano according to Islamic rites.
