Dickson Defends NDC Registration, Dismisses Allegations as Propaganda

The National Leader of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Seriake Dickson, has defended the legitimacy of the party’s registration, rejecting claims of irregularities and urging Nigerians to disregard what he described as politically motivated propaganda.

In a statement shared via his X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, the former Bayelsa State governor maintained that the NDC’s registration process dates back to 2017, contrary to allegations that the party was recently approved without due process by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Dickson explained that the party had initiated its registration years ago and had already secured preliminary approval before the process was stalled.

“For the record, the annexures show that we initiated the registration process for the NDC as far back as 2017 and that INEC granted approval at that time before the process was halted,” he said.

According to him, the party later revisited and updated its application when INEC resumed the registration of political associations, thereby complying with all regulatory requirements.

The clarification comes amid growing controversy sparked by allegations from Umar Ardo, convener of the League of Northern Democrats and promoter of the All Democratic Alliance. Ardo had accused INEC of unlawfully registering the NDC in violation of constitutional provisions and its own guidelines.

In a recent interview, Ardo alleged that while his group and others fulfilled all conditions for registration, they were sidelined, while the NDC was allegedly granted recognition under questionable circumstances.

“The reason is that NDC obtained registration without applying, without meeting the requirements set by law, without meeting the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution, and without meeting INEC’s guidelines,” he claimed.

However, Dickson firmly rejected the accusations, insisting that the NDC followed due process and warning against the spread of misinformation.

“With my experience in politics, I am fully aware that an ambitious project of this nature will attract distractions—rumours, gossip, propaganda, and even blackmail,” he said.

He urged Nigerians not to be distracted, emphasizing that the party remains focused on its broader vision of national renewal.

The dispute unfolds against the backdrop of intensifying political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections. Notably, prominent opposition figures including Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso have recently aligned with the NDC, signaling a potential shift in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Dickson described their involvement as part of a strategic coalition-building effort aimed at establishing a formidable ideological platform capable of challenging existing power structures.

“What we are witnessing is a powerful convergence: my role as a party organiser and builder, alongside two political heavyweights with immense grassroots support, popularity and political experience,” he said.

He further outlined the party’s long-term ambition to evolve into a durable political institution comparable to global models such as the African National Congress (ANC) in South Africa, as well as established political parties across Europe, the United States, India, and even the Communist Party of China.

Highlighting its internal philosophy, Dickson said the NDC is designed to prioritise inclusion, with a particular focus on empowering young people and women through mentorship and leadership development.

“The NDC is a party with a special place for young people and women, one that prioritises mentorship and prepares citizens for service,” he said.

He concluded by calling on Nigerians to join the party and actively participate in shaping its future.

“I call on all Nigerians to join the NDC, register, participate, and contest elections. Together, let us reclaim and rebuild our country,” he added.
