The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned the alleged attack and obstruction of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during a visit to Yelwata community in Benue State, where more than 270 people were reportedly killed.
In a press statement dated September 7, 2026, and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the NDC alleged that armed thugs, reportedly led by an aide to Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, blocked Obi’s convoy and prevented him from entering the community.
According to the statement, Obi arrived in Benue at about 9 a.m. to visit victims and families affected by the killings but was stopped from proceeding to Yelwata by people chanting, “Peter Obi, go back.”
The former Anambra State governor was quoted as saying that his visit was not political but intended to allow him mourn with the victims, listen to bereaved families and offer solidarity at a time of “unimaginable pain.”
The NDC described the alleged obstruction as “deeply troubling and condemnable,” arguing that Obi’s visit was solely intended to sympathise with grieving families and hear their concerns about preventing future tragedies.
The party said Benue and Nigerians generally deserve to “live, sleep peacefully, travel safely, and farm their lands without fear,” insisting that the protection of human life must be the government’s foremost responsibility.
“Although access to the community was denied today, the hearts and prayers of the NDC and our Presidential Candidate remain with the victims, their families, and the entire Yelwata community,” the statement said.
The NDC also called on the Benue State Government and relevant security agencies to immediately investigate the incident, identify and prosecute those responsible, and guarantee the safety of citizens and leaders seeking to show solidarity with victims of violence.
“We will not be deterred,” the party declared, adding that it would continue its campaign until government fully restores what it described as its “fundamental responsibility” to protect every Nigerian’s life.
