There was panic at the Unity Fountain in Abuja on Thursday after activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore reportedly collapsed during a confrontation between protesters and security operatives at a Democracy Day demonstration.
The protest, organised to draw attention to rising insecurity, economic hardship and concerns over governance, was disrupted when police operatives moved to disperse the gathering.
Witnesses said security personnel fired tear gas canisters at the protesters, forcing many participants to flee the venue. Amid the ensuing chaos, Sowore reportedly collapsed, triggering concern among supporters and fellow demonstrators.
The activist was subsequently attended to by those at the scene before being taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical evaluation and treatment.
The extent of his condition was not immediately clear as of the time of filing this report.
The Democracy Day protest was one of several demonstrations held across parts of the country, with participants expressing dissatisfaction over the economic situation, rising cost of living and security challenges.
