The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has named former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, as the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the 2027 presidential election.
The announcement, made on Monday by ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, formally establishes the Atiku-Amaechi ticket as the party intensifies preparations for the next general election.
According to the party, Amaechi’s selection followed extensive consultations with party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women groups, as well as representatives from across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.
The ADC said the decision was influenced by Amaechi’s performance during the party’s presidential primaries, where he emerged as runner-up, and his long record of public service at both state and federal levels.
In a statement, the party described the Atiku-Amaechi partnership as a “unity and rescue ticket” designed to provide experienced leadership capable of addressing Nigeria’s economic, security and governance challenges.
“Together, Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi embody a truly national ticket—one that bridges regions, generations and political traditions,” the party said.
The ADC highlighted Amaechi’s political career, noting that he served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term Governor of Rivers State and later Minister of Transportation, where he oversaw major rail and transportation projects.
The party argued that his experience across both the legislative and executive arms of government would strengthen its presidential campaign and broaden its national appeal ahead of the 2027 polls.
It further stated that Amaechi’s political influence in the South-South region and his ability to build alliances across ethnic, regional and political divides make him a strategic complement to Atiku’s candidacy.
“The proposed partnership represents more than a political alliance; it is the coming together of two tested statesmen with the experience, national reach and leadership capacity required to rescue Nigeria from its current challenges,” the statement added.
The ADC also called on party members, coalition partners, civil society organisations, youth groups and Nigerians to rally behind the ticket, expressing confidence that the Atiku-Amaechi combination would energise its growing coalition and offer voters what it described as a credible alternative in 2027.
