Social Democratic Party (SDP) chieftain Adewole has said any Nigerian government selling petrol above ₦200 per litre is making excessive profit and “robbing” citizens.
Adewole made the statement in Ibadan, Oyo State, while addressing supporters at an SDP gathering focused on the party’s proposed solutions to poverty, insecurity and economic hardship.
“Any government in Nigeria that sells petrol for ₦200 per litre is making a lot of profit. Any government that sells above that is a thief and is robbing you,” he said.
He criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu over rising fuel and food prices, arguing that government officials are insulated from the economic pressures confronting ordinary Nigerians.
Adewole also faulted successive governments for failing to provide affordable education, healthcare, housing and employment, saying such services should be regarded as basic responsibilities of government rather than privileges.
He said Nigeria’s challenges could be addressed within four years if citizens became more organised and demanded accountability from political leaders.
The SDP chieftain urged Nigerians to take a more active role in elections, stressing that voting should be accompanied by proper monitoring of vote counting and the protection of polling-unit results.
Adewole also called for greater community-level political organisation, arguing that citizens must look beyond ethnic and religious divisions to address problems affecting the country collectively.
He said the SDP’s proposed programme would prioritise education, healthcare, housing, electricity, employment and security, expressing confidence that Nigeria could be significantly transformed if citizens and government worked towards those goals.
