The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has unveiled a National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System aimed at tackling Nigeria’s longstanding addressing problem and improving emergency response, logistics, access to credit and public planning.
The Postmaster General of the Federation/ CEO, NIPOST, Tola Odeyemi announced the initiative in her goodwill message to mark World Post Day 2026, describing it as a key part of NIPOST’s efforts to support Nigeria’s digital transformation.
Launched on October 1, 2026, the system is designed to give every addressable building in Nigeria, including homes, shops, farms, schools and offices, a unique geospatial identity.
According to the PMG, the system will help courier companies locate addresses more easily, enable emergency responders to reach people in need and assist financial institutions in verifying customers’ locations.
She explained that the system is backed by mapping technology and managed through NIPOST’s new Geographic Information System (GIS) Laboratory.
The Postmaster General said the digital postcode system would also support more efficient postal and logistics operations, access to credit and better public planning.
She added that NIPOST was strengthening its logistics services, investing in technology and partnering with other organisations to help small businesses, farmers, artisans and online traders deliver their products more efficiently across the country.
As part of its transformation plans, NIPOST is also working to convert post offices into service centres where Nigerians can access logistics, government services, digital tools and financial services closer to their communities.
Odeyemi said the agency was repositioning itself beyond traditional letter delivery to become a key part of Nigeria’s digital economy, with a focus on e-commerce, financial inclusion and improved customer service.
The 2026 World Post Day celebration is themed “One Postal Network, Infinite Possibilities.”
