The British Government has said it is committed to ensuring credible elections in Nigeria next year.
To this end, it said it will partner with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to achieve seamless elections in Nigeria.
The Political Counsellor British High Commission in Nigeria, Jonathan Bacon, disclosed this on Monday evening while speaking to journalists after a closed-door meeting with Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike at his country home in Rumueiprikom, Obio-Akpor Local Government Area.
Bacon, who led other officials of the British High Commission on the visit, described the meeting with Wike as very productive. He noted that the British Government was monitoring the situation in Nigeria ahead of the 2023 elections.
“We discussed the electoral period looking ahead to 2023, and I reiterated the British Government’s position that we are supporting the process. We are also working very closely with INEC, hoping for a free, fair and credible election in 2023,” he said.
He stated that the meeting with the governor also centred on cementing the relationship between the United Kingdom, Nigeria and Rivers State.
“The British High Commission Team from Abuja has come to River State today for a number of meetings. We had a meeting just now with His Excellency, the Governor of River State. We discussed how we could further strengthen cooperation between the UK and Nigeria and the UK and Rivers State”, he noted.
