The relative peace in Wase local government area of Plateau state was shattered on Sunday as no fewer than seven people were killed when gunmen invaded a local market in the area.
Many people were also injured in the incident which occurred in Zurak Campani community of the local council.
Eye witnesses say the incident occurred at a time the market was in full swing.
A youth in the community, Abdullahi Hussaini, who confirmed the incident, told newsmen that the gunmen arrived the market around 2:OO pm, and suddenly started shooting sporadically at people doing businesses.
Hussain said “The gunmen arrived the Market in their numbers riding on motorcycles. They started shooting sporadically killing seven people instantly while many others injured.
“They successfully launched the attack and fled without any resistance because people were not expecting any security threat at the moment.
“The gunmen fled to the bush but police personnel have been deployed to the community to restore law and other. We are calling on more security deployment in the area because we don’t know what may happen anytime soon, ” the youth leader said.
Spokesperson of the state police command, DSP Alabo Alfred, couldn’t be reached for his comments.
