The Edo State House of Assembly has issued an impeachment notice against the State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu.
SYMFONY News reports that the lawmakers issued the notice during plenary on Wednesday, 6th March, 2024.
Shaibu’s impeachment notice might not be unconnected to his face-off with the state Governor, Godwin Obaseki that had led to him losing out during the just concluded Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, gubernatorial election primaries in the state.
Recall that Shaibu had alleged a plot to impeach him from office, claiming his governorship ambition was responsible for the plot.
He emerged governorship candidate after a parallel primary poll that was held at his home in Benin City, the state capital.
Asue Ighodalo was also announced winner of another PDP primary exercise which took place at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin.
Announcing the impeachment notice, the Majority Leader, Hon. Charity Aiguobarueghian (PDP Ovia North-East 1), said the petition dated March 5 against Shaibu, was signed by 21 of the 24 members of the legislature.
He added that the petition was based on perjury and revelation of government’s secrets
Aiguobarueghian noted that the number of members who signed the petition was higher than the two-third constitutional requirement.
Speaker of the house, Hon. Blessing Agbebaku (PDP-Owan-West), who acknowledged receipt of the petition, directed the Clerk of the house, Mr Yahaya Omogbai, to serve the impeachment notice on the deputy governor.
Agbebaku also gave the deputy governor seven days to respond to the notice of impeachment.
