MTN Nigeria has explained why customers have been experiencing challenges connecting to the network due to a major service outage caused by multiple fibre cuts.
Its spokesperson, Mr Funso Aina, disclosed this via a WhatsApp chat in response to questions on why MTN customers were unable to connect to their network for several hours on Wednesday.
He assured that the company’s engineers were working hard to resolve the matter, adding that some locations had already seen a gradual restoration of services.
The spokesperson said: “Our customers have been experiencing challenges connecting to the network due to a major service outage caused by multiple fibre cuts, affecting voice and data services.
“Our engineers are working hard to resolve with services gradually being restored in some areas.
We apologise for the inconvenience and ask for your patience & understanding as the team works to restore full service as soon as possible.”
On Wednesday, MTN customers were unable to access communication services for hours, leaving many traumatised.
The telco’s services were disrupted by the hours-long network shutdown, which started around noon and lasted for several hours. Many also complained of how the network downtime affected their ability to make online bank transfers and pay for goods and services. Some of the customers took to their X handles to express their grievances.

Another user, @SirHenz said: “As much as I love using MTN. I must complain and say this right now. Your network has been very terrible for a while now.
“What’s going on ?My MTN Hynet is not up to par and I can barely even watch videos on X or even see pictures. Am I the only one experiencing this issue? Is this part of the new campaign to get us to buy a 5G router ? Fix up your network please.”
Also lamenting, @Mazi_bob wrote: “Bro no be only you. The network is just wasting my money. I will work, use my money to buy data from MTN and I won’t get the value of what I paid for. It’s annoying. Very annoying”
