In a move to clean up the land management system in Nigeria’s capital, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration has taken a new step under the leadership of Minister Nyesom Wike. The government has approved the setup of special vetting team to sort out land issues that have dragged on for years in Abuja’s six area councils.
This decision comes after many complaints and confusion surrounding land ownership, especially in mass housing schemes. For years, residents who bought unit houses in these schemes have struggled to get official titles for their homes. But now, that’s about to change.
Speaking on Friday during the inauguration of the vetting teams, the FCT Director of Land Administration, Chijioke Nwankwoeze, said this new initiative is designed to end the backlog and confusion around land regularisation. He added that the teams have been given clear orders to work swiftly and thoroughly.
“The Minister has shown strong political will. With these teams, we’re not just solving problems — we’re bringing sanity back into land administration,” Nwankwoeze said.
The vetting team is expected to fast-track the regularization process, making sure that all land allocations done by the area councils are verified, cleaned up, and properly titled. This means that individuals who have bought houses under various mass housing programmes can now expect to receive official titles to their homes.
Nwankwoeze noted that beyond just sorting paperwork, the goal is to restore public confidence. For many Abuja residents, buying land or property has felt risky due to unclear titles and overlapping claims. But with this new effort, the government wants to change that narrative.

He also called on developers and property owners to support the process and the vetting team, assuring them that the FCT administration is committed to transparency and fast service.
“This isn’t just a one-time fix — it’s a bold and lasting step to make sure our land system works for everyone,” he said.
This initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aiming to bring reforms that directly impact the lives of everyday Nigerians.
