Air travelers using the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu will have to make new plans, as the Federal Government has ordered a temporary shutdown of the airport for urgent runway repairs.
The Enugu Airport closure, which will begin on April 22 and run through May 6, 2025, is meant to fix a badly damaged section of the runway that could pose serious risks to flights. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) explained that the damage was sudden and serious enough to require immediate attention.
Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at FAAN, said in a statement that the runway developed a significant rupture, making it unsafe for both takeoffs and landings.
“In line with aviation safety regulations, FAAN has shut the runway to allow emergency repairs. The goal is to protect passengers and ensure a safer flying experience once the work is done,” Orah said.
All flights originally scheduled to land at or depart from Enugu will now be redirected to other nearby airports. FAAN is asking for patience and understanding from travelers, airlines, and airport workers.
The sudden announcement has already begun to affect flight schedules. Leading Nigerian airline, Air Peace, suspended all its flights to the airport, citing long-standing concerns over the airport’s worsening condition.
This isn’t the first time Akanu Ibiam International Enugu Airport has faced closure. In 2019, the airport was shut down for nearly a year due to similar safety issues. Many travelers fear a repeat of that experience, though FAAN insists this closure is short-term and strictly focused on runway repairs.

For now, passengers are advised to check with their airlines for new travel arrangements and stay updated on the repair progress. FAAN has promised to work swiftly to complete the project on time and restore full airport operations.
