The Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party, Nenadi Usman, on Thursday participated in the party’s ward congress in Jere South Ward, Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State, as the party launched its nationwide congress exercise.
The congress, held jointly with Jere North Ward, saw party members peacefully elect new ward executives to oversee grassroots operations.
Speaking after monitoring the process, Usman described the exercise as orderly and in line with party traditions.
“This marks the commencement of our congresses at the ward level. What you have seen here are Jere North and Jere South conducting their congresses together, as is customary. New executives have been duly elected,” she said.
She outlined the party’s timetable, noting that the exercise will proceed to local government congresses on April 24, followed by state congresses on April 25, before culminating in a national convention in Umuahia, Abia State, on April 28.
Reaffirming the party’s stance on inclusivity, Usman emphasized the need for stronger female participation in leadership, particularly within party structures.
Ward congresses were conducted across Nigeria’s 8,809 political wards, with elected executives expected to play key roles in subsequent phases of the process.
Usman expressed satisfaction with the overall conduct, citing reports of peaceful and well-coordinated exercises nationwide. She also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its professionalism and timely deployment of monitoring teams.
“Reports from across the federation indicate that the exercise was largely peaceful and well-organised, with INEC playing a commendable role through timely monitoring,” she said.
She urged party members to maintain the peaceful atmosphere as the process advances to the remaining stages, including the national convention.
