The Labour Party has rescheduled all its 2027 primary elections to Saturday, May 30, 2026, citing a clash with major national events.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, said the governorship and State House of Assembly primaries earlier fixed for May 27, as well as the presidential and National Assembly primaries scheduled for May 29, would now hold on the same day.
According to the party, the decision followed the overlap of the initial dates with the 2026 Eid el-Kabir celebration and the third anniversary of the inauguration of elected public office holders across the country.
“The Labour Party, as a people-oriented and responsive political party, deemed it appropriate to adjust its schedule in order to enable members, aspirants, supporters, and Nigerians generally to fully observe these important occasions,” the statement read.
The party explained that May 27 coincides with the Eid al-Adha celebration, while May 29 marks three years since elected officials assumed office after the 2023 general elections.
With the adjustment, all primaries for the offices of President, Governor, Senate, House of Representatives, and State Houses of Assembly will now be conducted simultaneously on May 30.
The party also apologised for any inconvenience the change may cause aspirants, stakeholders, and supporters, while thanking them for their understanding and cooperation.
