Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has officially announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as a bold and historic break from the past.
Speaking to Symfoni TV on Tuesday, Mbah said the decision followed deep reflection and wide consultation, emphasizing that it was not a personal move but a collective decision by his political family in Enugu State.
“Today, I stand before you to announce a break from the past and to share a decision that will shape the road ahead,” the governor declared. “After long reflection, we have made the decision to leave the PDP and join the APC. This is no whimsical decision.”
According to him, the defection enjoys the backing of members of the National Assembly, the State House of Assembly, the State Executive Council, all local government chairmen, councillors, political appointees, and more than 80 percent of party executives in the state.
Mbah explained that his administration’s development philosophy aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, particularly in the areas of youth empowerment, infrastructure development, and rural productivity.
“If you look at the development model at the center and what we are doing here in Enugu, you will see a clear synergy,” he said. “The Renewed Hope Web Development Programme is designed to empower over 8.8 million young Nigerians. Our own programmes also ensure that no section, no child, and no worker is left behind.”
Highlighting his administration’s inclusive approach, Mbah noted that schools, Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres, and farm estates are being built across all 260 electoral wards in the state — transforming rural communities into productive economic zones.
He said this synergy with the Federal Government’s policies informed his decision to align with the ruling party, adding that the move would accelerate Enugu’s integration into national development priorities.
“There’s a lot of synergy between what we are doing here and what the Federal Government is doing,” Mbah added. “This alignment is the right step forward.”
Governor Mbah’s defection marks a major political realignment in the Southeast, signaling a growing wave of support for the APC in the region.
