Former presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has renewed his call for comprehensive reforms of Nigeria’s emergency response systems following a visit to the Kugbo Furniture Market in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), where traders recently suffered massive losses due to a fire outbreak.
Obi, who was in Abuja on January 20 for a series of engagements, said he visited the market to express solidarity with traders whose goods worth millions of naira were destroyed in the incident. He described the losses as especially painful, coming at a time when many Nigerians are battling economic hardship and rising poverty.
According to him, the incident underscores the persistent weaknesses in Nigeria’s emergency management framework, stressing that a country committed to the welfare of its citizens must invest in efficient, responsive, and well-coordinated emergency services capable of preventing avoidable disasters.
“The ability to respond promptly to emergencies is not a luxury but a necessity,” Obi said, noting that lives and livelihoods depend on functional institutions.

The former Anambra State governor was accompanied on the visit by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Chairmanship candidate for AMAC, Dr. Moses Paul, as part of ongoing engagements ahead of the February 21, 2026, council elections.
Obi reiterated the need for institutional reforms that would ensure preventable tragedies are avoided and public systems work effectively for the benefit of all Nigerians.
