The Delta State Police Command has arrested and transferred an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Nuhu Usman, to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary action following the alleged extrajudicial killing of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun.
The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, Yemi Oyeniyi, condemned the incident, describing it as a clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force, which regulate the use of firearms by officers.
The incident occurred on April 26, 2026, after police operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command reportedly acted on intelligence that the deceased had been apprehended while attempting to send a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of live ammunition through a waybill service.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Bright Edafe, operatives were deployed to take custody of the suspect. However, the officer leading the team, ASP Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm, killing the suspect.
Edafe disclosed that the Commissioner of Police immediately directed the arrest of the officer, who was subsequently transferred from the Area Command in Effurun to the State Headquarters in Asaba, and later moved to Abuja for further disciplinary proceedings.
He confirmed that the officer has been queried and will appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee, which is currently in session, for immediate sanction and prosecution.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Edafe described the incident as deeply troubling and difficult to explain.
“This is a very sad issue. In my six years as a police spokesperson, this is the most difficult moment offor me because there is no explanation for this,” he said.
Providing further details, Edafe explained that transport companies had been instructed to inspect parcels following intelligence that criminal elements were using waybill services to transport weapons and illicit substances.
He noted that upon discovery of the firearm, the suspect was restrained and tied before officers were directed to retrieve him. However, despite the suspect being subdued and reportedly pleading for his life, the officer allegedly attempted to shoot him once, then reloaded and fired again, resulting in his death.
Edafe stressed that the police would not shield the officer, adding that he is expected to face murder charges.
“It is not explainable, it is not pardonable. The police do not cover officers like that. I am very sure he will have his day in court,” he stated.
The police spokesperson also reaffirmed the command’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, human rights, professionalism, and accountability, emphasizing a zero-tolerance stance on extrajudicial actions.
The Commissioner of Police extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them that justice would be served.
Members of the public have also been urged to remain calm and law-abiding as the police continue investigations and disciplinary processes into the incident.
