Lagos-based politician, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has reaffirmed his commitment to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), declaring that he will remain with the party despite ongoing political realignments within Nigeria’s opposition bloc.

In a press statement released on Monday, the 2023 Lagos gubernatorial candidate acknowledged the growing turbulence in the political landscape and the recent decisions by some politicians to pursue alternative platforms. However, he emphasized that his decision to stay in ADC is rooted in “conviction, not convenience.”

“I want to make it clear that I am staying in the African Democratic Congress (ADC). It is the platform we have built, the ground we have fought on, and the vehicle that can take us to victory,” he said.

The former Lagos governorship candidate noted that while others may be forging new alliances, he holds “genuine respect” for their choices and does not judge anyone for taking a different path.

Rhodes-Vivour traced his political journey from KOWA to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and later to the Labour Party, stressing that every move he made was guided by principle rather than personal gain.

He also reiterated his longstanding opposition to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, revealing that he had rejected offers and financial inducements to compromise.

“Not when agreements were put on the table. Not when billions were placed before me. I walked away then, and I would walk away again.”

The politician further recounted violent incidents that followed his declaration for ADC in Lagos, alleging that APC supporters attacked opposition members.

According to him, at least nine people were injured during one such incident, including his own sister.

“That is the price that was paid simply for the act of declaring — for saying we are here, we are organised, and we are not afraid.”

He added that similar violence occurred during the 2023 election cycle, where supporters of the Labour Party were allegedly targeted.

Rhodes-Vivour stressed the importance of unity among opposition forces, warning that division would only benefit the ruling party.

“A divided opposition will always lose. But a united, organised, and determined force can win.”

He highlighted grassroots efforts across Lagos since 2023, noting that his movement has built strong community networks across all local government areas.

Reaffirming his #OurLagos agenda, Rhodes-Vivour said his mission is to build a city where every resident has equal opportunity, where public institutions function effectively, and where elections reflect the true will of the people.

“That Lagos is not a fantasy. It is a choice.”

He concluded with a defiant message:

“This is our moment. This is our stand. And we will not back down.”
