Former presidential candidates, Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have formally defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), in a move that is already reshaping Nigeria’s opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The defection is confirmed after a high-level meeting with the party’s leadership in Abuja, where the NDC leader, Seriake Dickson, receives both politicians and their delegations.
The development marks a significant shift for the two political heavyweights, who are consolidating forces under a new platform amid ongoing realignments across Nigeria’s political space.
Speaking after the closed-door meeting, Obi warns the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) against interfering in the affairs of the NDC, stressing the need to allow the party grow without external disruptions.
He emphasizes that the focus must remain on building a stable political platform capable of addressing Nigeria’s deepening socio-economic and security challenges, rather than engaging in internal crises or externally induced conflicts.
Kwankwaso, in his remarks, calls on Nigerians to rally behind the NDC, describing it as a growing movement committed to inclusive leadership, national unity, and people-driven governance.
He urges party supporters and prospective members to align with the platform, positioning it as a viable alternative in the country’s evolving political equation.
The twin defection highlights intensifying efforts among opposition figures to forge new alliances and strengthen their chances ahead of future elections.
