Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has officially endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The announcement was made on Monday following a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat formally declared his intention to contest the state’s top seat before members of the State Executive Council and key party stakeholders.
Also present at the meeting were influential members of the Governor’s Advisory Council, including Musiliu Obanikoro and Ganiyu Solomon, among others.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu described the endorsement as a unanimous decision by party leaders and stakeholders in attendance. He expressed strong confidence in Hamzat’s capacity to lead Lagos State, citing his experience and competence.
According to the governor, Hamzat has demonstrated readiness for leadership through years of close collaboration, highlighting his integrity, loyalty, and commitment to governance.
Sanwo-Olu noted that his deputy has been deeply involved in the administration and understands the workings of government at the highest level, making him well-suited for the role.
The governor also acknowledged the role of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom he described as instrumental in shaping the political journey and working relationship between himself and Hamzat.
He characterised the meeting as a consultative engagement involving party leaders and government officials, stressing that the decision to back Hamzat followed broad consensus.
Sanwo-Olu concluded by describing his deputy as fully prepared for the governorship, adding that stakeholders believe he deserves the opportunity to lead Lagos State in the next political cycle.
