The Commissioner of Police, CP Adegoke Fayoade Jimoh, has announced the arrest of 23 suspected cultists, the recovery of 82 assorted firearms and ammunition, and the seizure of 36 stolen and fraudulently acquired vehicles in a criminal activity crackdown. The major breakthrough, described as part of ongoing security operations, was revealed during a press briefing held in Lagos on Thursday.
CP Jimoh credited the success to a combination of revamped policing strategies, intelligence sharing from citizens, and enhanced logistical support from both the Inspector General of Police and the Lagos State Government. “When I assumed duty, we adopted new crime prevention tactics and command restructuring to tackle criminality head-on. These efforts are now yielding results,” he said.
The Commissioner revealed that several of the recovered vehicles, some valued in the hundreds of millions of naira—including a luxury vehicle stolen from abroad—were snatched from other states or fraudulently acquired in Lagos. Some of them were recovered from suspected fraudsters, while others were found in possession of fleeing drivers and criminal syndicates.
Beyond stolen vehicles, CP Jimoh showcased a cache of weapons recovered from suspects, including AK-47 rifles, locally fabricated guns, pump-action shotguns, and dangerous tools used for robbery and burglary. He highlighted the disturbing trend of fabricated weapons, including toy guns and homemade firearms, used to commit violent crimes.

“The police have dismantled multiple cultist cells across the state. Over 50 cultists are currently facing prosecution for murder, possession of illegal firearms, and disturbing the peace,” the CP disclosed. He also announced that a police officer had been arrested for allegedly supplying weapons to criminals and is now under investigation.
To further combat cult-related violence, CP Jimoh stated that anti-cultism units have been established and reinforced across all 14 police area commands in Lagos. These units have played a pivotal role in recovering weapons and arresting gang members involved in violent crimes.
Regarding the upcoming local government elections, CP Jimoh assured Lagosians of adequate security. He confirmed that thousands of additional police officers have been deployed from surrounding states, alongside anti-riot equipment and full marine police patrol for riverine areas.
“Our plan is comprehensive—before, during, and after the elections. We are prepared for any scenario, including celebratory violence or protest,” CP Jimoh emphasized. He urged political parties and their supporters to act responsibly and assured that only recognized federal agencies would be allowed to provide security on election day.
In closing, the CP expressed deep appreciation for the officers and tactical teams who have worked tirelessly to ensure peace across Lagos. He encouraged the public to continue providing useful information and reassured residents that Lagos remains safe for law-abiding citizens.
“We are not leaving any stone unturned. Anyone who chooses the path of crime will face the full wrath of the law,” he declared.
