The Nigeria Data Protection Commission is set to host delegates from nine African countries in a major cross-regional study tour focused on strengthening data protection frameworks across the continent.
The high-level engagement, scheduled to take place in Abuja from May 4 to 5, 2026, is being organized in collaboration with the World Bank Group and Smart Africa. The initiative aims to promote peer learning, policy alignment, and regional cooperation in the rapidly evolving field of data governance.
According to event details, participating countries include The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ethiopia, Burundi, Somalia, Malawi, Zambia, and Kenya. The study tour will provide a platform for knowledge exchange on regulatory frameworks, compliance mechanisms, and digital security standards.
In addition to country representatives, key regional organizations such as the Economic Community of West African States, the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development will also participate, highlighting the continental significance of the engagement.
The NDPC has increasingly positioned Nigeria as a leader in data protection regulation in Africa, especially following the implementation of its data protection laws and compliance frameworks. This study tour is expected to deepen collaboration among African nations as they work toward harmonized data protection standards and improved digital trust.
