Reps Seek Deeper Partnership with Police to Protect Downstream Petroleum Infrastructure

The Nigerian House of Representatives has praised the Kayode Egbetokun and the Nigeria Police Force for their efforts in protecting pipelines, depots, and other oil facilities, helping to stabilise fuel supply across the country. The commendation came during a visit by the House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), led by Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, to the Police Headquarters in Abuja.

The committee presented the Police with a Special Award of Recognition for their role in ensuring energy security.

Ugochinyere said the Police have reduced vandalism, theft, and attacks on oil infrastructure through strategic patrols, pipeline monitoring, and safe transportation of fuel from depots to filling stations. He added that police engagement with host communities has also helped prevent disruptions and allowed many closed stations to reopen.

The lawmakers also praised the Police for working with regulators to stop illegal refineries and black-market fuel activities, which has strengthened the formal petroleum market.

While commending their work, Ugochinyere called for closer collaboration, including intelligence-led patrols, faster response to supply disruptions, and a dedicated downstream security coordination desk within the Police. In response, IGP Egbetokun said protecting oil and gas infrastructure is critical for national stability, economic security, and public welfare. He highlighted the need for legislative support, better funding, modern surveillance tools, and improved welfare for officers deployed to high-risk areas.

He assured the lawmakers that the Police remain committed to professionalism, accountability, and ongoing collaboration to maintain uninterrupted fuel supply and protect Nigeria’s critical energy assets.

This engagement is part of continuous efforts between the National Assembly and security agencies to strengthen protection of Nigeria’s oil and gas infrastructure and ensure stable fuel availability nationwide.
