Rivers Youths Set to Shine as Torch of Unity Lights Up Port Harcourt

Excitement filled the air in Port Harcourt as the Torch of Unity arrived in Rivers State ahead of the 22nd National Sports Festival. But beyond the fanfare, the big story was the message from the state’s Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (Rtd): “Rivers athletes, go for gold!”

Receiving the torch at Government House on Saturday, Vice Admiral Ibas didn’t just speak about medals—he spoke about purpose. He reminded the crowd that sports can do more than entertain; it can unite a nation, empower the youth, and inspire a generation.

“This is not just about winning,” he said. “It’s about building character, bringing people together, and showing the world what Rivers youths are capable of.”

The Torch of Unity, which started its journey from President Bola Tinubu in March, is making its way through all 36 states before the main festival begins in Abeokuta on May 16. Its stop in Rivers State is not just symbolic—it’s a call to action.

Mrs. Ikana Mbora, who led the delegation from the National Sports Commission, explained that the torch represents hope, unity, and opportunity for young Nigerians. “We believe sports is a tool for peace and growth,” she said.

As the torch heads to Bayelsa next, Rivers State is already buzzing with preparations. The athletes are training hard, the facilities are being fine-tuned, and the government is promising full support for the competitors.

“You will not go unnoticed,” Vice Admiral Ibas told the athletes. “Your hard work will be rewarded.”

With energy building and expectations rising, all eyes are now on the young stars of Rivers State—ready to make their mark and lift the spirit of the nation.
