Sanwo-Olu Launches New Intelligent Transport System to Boost Road Safety

LAGOS, Nigeria – In a bid to enhance traffic management and curb road accidents, the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, in partnership with Huawei Technologies, has unveiled four new Intelligent Transport System (ITS) sites across the metropolis. The move, announced during a press briefing on Thursday by Transportation Commissioner Oluwaseun Osiyemi, is set to complement the state’s existing traffic enforcement tools, including Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and other Traffic Management Solution devices.

Commissioner Osiyemi detailed that two of the newly deployed sites serve as speed detection checkpoints. One is located at Alapere on Ogudu Road, enforcing an 80 km/h speed limit, while the other is situated at Nitel along Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, where the speed limit is set at 60 km/h. “These checkpoint sites are strategically located to detect and deter overspeeding, which remains one of the leading causes of road accidents,” he said.

In addition to the speed checkpoints, the deployment includes two e-police sites installed at Allen Avenue Road Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road. These advanced systems are designed to monitor a range of traffic violations such as running red lights, non-compliance with lane discipline, illegal U-turns, and reverse driving on highways.

Highlighting the enforcement measures, Osiyemi explained that motorists caught violating traffic laws will receive SMS notifications from the Vehicle Inspection Service. The notices will detail the nature of the violation along with the corresponding fines – N20,000 for running red lights and N50,000 for speeding offences. “This system is not designed to be punitive but to encourage responsible driving behaviour and reduce the rate of accidents on our roads. The goal is simple: to save lives, protect property, and create an orderly transportation environment,” he added.

The briefing was attended by key state officials, including the Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology, Olatunbosun Alake; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Olawale Musa; and representatives from Huawei Technologies, underscoring the collaborative effort to modernize Lagos’ traffic infrastructure.

As enforcement of these new measures begins immediately, Lagos motorists are urged to adhere strictly to traffic regulations. The ITS initiative marks another milestone in the state’s broader strategy to leverage technology for safer, more efficient road networks in one of Africa’s busiest cities, Lagos.
