Senator Nwaebonyi Peter has thrown his weight behind a bill focused on sustaining the ongoing infrastructural transformation in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. During a plenary session, the senator passionately called for the inclusion of communities around the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in future development plans, stressing the need to improve the nation’s image.
The senator said he supported the bill because of the “total infrastructural transformation” taking place in the FCT, which he described as commendable. He urged the National Assembly to continue backing the Honourable Minister of State for the Territory (ST), whom he praised for his efforts so far.
“Mr. President, I rise to support this bill… It also requires the cooperation of the parliament to enable the Honourable Minister to continue his good works,” Senator Nwaebonyi stated.
He drew attention to the unsightly conditions of informal settlements around the Abuja airport, which he said do not reflect well on the country, especially to international visitors arriving in the capital.

“If you are descending into Abuja airport, the infrastructure around does not give a good image of this country,” he said. “The Minister should capture these communities in the next budget and work towards relocating the inhabitants.”
Senator Nwaebonyi pointed out the contrast between the beautifully lit eight-lane airport road and the nearby clusters of poorly developed housing, calling them an “eyesore” and a missed opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s capital at its best.
His comments sparked mixed reactions among his colleagues. Some agreed with the sentiment, noting the need for better planning and aesthetics in Abuja. Others cautioned against displacing citizens without clear resettlement plans.
“These are people’s villages. Are we saying we should evacuate them just so we can enjoy a better view while descending into Abuja?” Senate President, Akpabio queried during the debate.
In response, Senator Nwaebonyi emphasized that the conversation was not about eliminating people’s homes unjustly, but about upgrading the capital’s appearance in line with global standards.
