Calistus Okafor, a factional chairman of the Labour Party (LP), has announced his departure from the party, bringing along five million loyal followers. Okafor, who has been in the Labour Party since 2005, said the party has been in crisis for over seven years and has now become unhealthy for his mental well-being.
In an emotional press briefing, he said, “Enough is enough,” as he explained that the internal crisis within the Labour Party has dragged on for too long without resolution. According to him, all efforts to unite the party failed, and it became clear that the leadership was not willing or able to fix the problems.
Okafor revealed that he and his team have now joined a new political movement called Team Wazobia Nigeria, where he is now the national coordinator. He described Team Wazobia as a true grassroots structure with presence in polling units, wards, and local governments, unlike what he called “social media movements.”
Although they have not joined any political party, Okafor expressed strong admiration for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, praising his leadership, development efforts, and political strength. He said Abuja under Tinubu’s administration now looks like European cities, pointing to ongoing infrastructure projects and economic reforms,

He also used the opportunity to criticize Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for failing to unite the party. He said if Obi could not bring harmony to his own party, he should not be trusted to govern Nigeria. Okafo also accused Obi of supporting Julius Abure despite corruption allegations and failing to engage with other party leaders during the 2023 campaign.

Okafor said Team Wazobia would work to support Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, describing him as a focused and consistent leader. He hinted at the possibility of joining the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the future but made it clear that for now, his group is not officially part of any political party.
“We don’t belong to any party for now, but we align fully with Mr. President,” he said.
